Studio Assistant Application

Pottery Studio assistants are the key to running a successful community studio. This assistantship will give potters access to a studio and equipment without having to pay for a space. In this position, persons will work in exchange for studio access. Pottery Studio assistants must be 18 years or older, responsible, have reliable transportation, able to multitask, and have a flexible work schedule. 

While pottery experience is not required, some clay knowledge is desired. Pottery assistants must have a great work ethic and the willingness to learn new things. Because of the limited space, production potters may not find this position to be the best fit. Arrangements could be made if more space, firings, and studio use is needed for assistants.

 

Weekday Assistantship Description:

Studio assistants will be responsible for general studio cleaning, mixing glazes, fixing/ firing kilns, recycling clay, and overall maintenance of the pottery studio, totaling 6 hrs a week. In exchange for their services Assistants will receive 50lbs of clay every 7 weeks, access to the pottery studio to work on their own pieces when there is no class or workshop, and cubby/shelf space to store their work and tools. Leftover student bags of clay and recycled clay are often offered as well as alternative firings such as Raku. All work made from the allotted 50lbs of clay will be fired. Assistants can rent kiln space at a discount for additional work made from recycled clay and purchased bags of clay. Weekday assistants may also be offered spots in classes and workshops first when spots are available.

Open Studio Assistant Description:

Open Studio assistants will be responsible for general cleaning, opening, supervising and closing open studio for at least 4 days a session (20 hours) as well as participating in projects and completing tasks periodically. Open studio assistants will also be responsible for 2 studio cleanings each that happen every 7 weeks (once a session). 

In exchange for their services Assistants will receive a bag of clay every 7 weeks, access to the pottery studio to work on their own pieces when there is no class or workshop, and cubby/shelf space to store their work and tools. Leftover student bags of clay and recycled clay are often offered as well as alternative firings such as Raku. All work made from the allotted 25lb bag of clay will be fired. Assistants can rent kiln space at a discount for additional work made from recycled clay and purchased bags of clay.

Once your application is accepted we will schedule an interview and tour of Liberty Arts and the Pottery studio.

 

All new assistants will be given an initial 3-month Provisional Assistantship.  Anytime during the initial 3-month period assistants may be asked to leave if the assistantship is not proving to be a good fit. Assistants may also leave without question during this period. 

A performance review will be held at the end of the provisional period. If the assistantship is working for the assistant and the Pottery studio, the assistantship may continue for another year.

 

Assistantships will last 1 year and may be renewed for another year after a positive performance review. Assistants may leave anytime during their assistantship with a 2 week notice.
